The Changing Face of Victoria exhibition at the State Library Victoria showcases a new display on champion roller skaters Francis PC Beyer and his daughters Hilda and Ruby.

A renowned roller skater and the proprietor of a number of rollerskating rinks throughout Australia and New Zealand during the early 20th century, Francis Beyer introduced novelty into the art of rollerskating.

He hosted grand fancy dress carnivals, poster and advertisement galas, roller races, polo matches, fancy skating displays and games, often accompanied by a live orchestra.

Hilda and Ruby Beyer became professional ‘lady skaters’, competing in roller polo matches and demonstrating their fancy skating manoeuvres to captivated spectators in rinks around Australia.

This display is part of Christine Eid's ongoing research project into the Beyer family.
